You're off. First. It didn't sell 3.9 million. I't shipped that many. Meaning many of those 3.9 million could still be sitting on shelves. Two, MS doesn't have the biggest system selling franchises. GoW and Halo? Two franchises done to death, their recent entries both got lukewarm reception. If you're going to try to use system seller titles, at least spout off about Titanfall or something.

Jack and "his" are nothing like Don Mattrick buddy. They are out there constantly doing interviews and trying to seem personable to the audience. Don Mattrick would never show up for anything unless a major console launch was on the way, or there was a major press conference. That is why his PR was so out of touch, he just didn't know how to communicate. So he ended up saying things like "Don't have internet? Good news. Get an Xbox 360."

Probably close to finally being profitable? Surface has sold a small fraction of the tablet market, incredibly small, they are hoping to reach 1% market share by 2014. Real competitive. Windows phone currently has 2.3% of market share. As opposed to android which is carrying 81.9% and Apple which is carrying 12.1%
I don't have any figures handy for xbox and bing, but you get where I'm going. Microsoft is hardly the only "real competition" for whoever is lead...
