I believe it depends on the genre primarily...for instance, puzzle games are just random shooting or solving to stop somethin bad from happening? Nothin big on story...but in terms of RPG's...story is key. It is one of the more defining elements of an RPG or even a shooter or action game (God of War Series, Gears of War, Final Fantasy)Story is important...
