Maybe they could be, but it's hard to say with a straight face that these platforms have games in the console / platform sense, and not just renditions of pretty classic card and board games.

I mean, I play hearts on my phone all the time, but that doesn't really make it a gaming machine.

The doesn't was intentional, yes. I don't think you misconstrued my comment in the literal sense, but I do think we're using different definitions of hardcore.

I was operating mostly on a time-based definition, not complexity of gameplay; I dislike WoW for pretty much the exact reasons you listed. I am unwilling to spend time on gameplay that doesn't feel challenging in some regard, and WoW does not fit that bill.

Using the complexity of gam...

I feel like I've been waiting for a Wii game that really uses the wiimote to interesting, specific effect (and not just felt like a mini-game in the process) since the machine came out. I fully expect to have the same experience with Kinect.

Despite this, I really do think Wiimote / Playstation Move / Kinect are all steps in the right direction. The folks that take these products and apply them to real, interesting problems are the guys who are really pushing the tech w...

If G4 is really trying so hard to appeal to the gaming crowd, you'd think there'd be more coverage of tourneys and strategy. It'd be interesting to see, say, a competitive TF2 tourney televised with commentary going.

The running Madden commentary, only for FPS games, anyone? Get F4tality (or however you spell his silly nick) to break down plays.

Interesting article.

I'm unwilling to call a shift towards casual gaming a killing blow for our hobby; quality has a command and appeal all its own. There will always be room for the next hardcore game.

Besides, when you see games like WoW and CoD do so well, it's hard to say with a straight face that the hardcore gamer doesn't still command respect.

Try out ARMA II, Habeeb - not perfectly realistic, but the first time you pass out from sprinting too much, you'll start to feel the difference.

I expect 3D to slide into the position of standard without the kind of explosive sales I suspect the hardware manufacturers are pushing for; the difference is nice once you get to it, but it's not quite a giant leap when you're already dealing in games that render 3D world.
