You can do whichever you like. You can buy the disc or buy digital from Xbox.com or xbox 360 store. And the compatible games will show up on your -ready to install- list.
I bought one for the kids. And I already set it everything up. All profiles and Forza Horizon 2, Gears downloaded. I copied over some of my digital buys worked fine on and off line.
Trust me better setting it up. Because your kids get it, and instead of plug and play. They stuck waiting like a hr just to play a game.
You'll definitely like it. Btw, if you have some nice cans. Cant recommend it enough dude. Halo 5 was the first game I played with headphones(cheap $10 ones from cvs) and what a great soundtrack and experience.

Actually they had to shell out the money to play online. Netflix was added to that already paid service. PSN just happened to be free, so you didnt pay twice. You paying now tho...lol.
Dude I dont know why i got so many disagrees. I have a Xbox One and have played my Xbox One digital purchases offline. Make your Xbox home before going offline. If you purchased the game and never played it it will ask for you to go online.

Actually.... you dont need to have your Xbox One online to play digital games. Its downloads right to your hard drive and as long as you set your system to "home xbox" your are all set.

The good thing about the external is you can bring it with you to friends home. And its plug and play no need for game installs...just gotta sign in with your gt. Some games run faster off it(imo). So its more than just having a external hdd support. You cant take the PS4 hhd and bring to your friends and play your games can you? No..ok
