I don't know where all this talk of PS3 lasting another ten years is coming from. The PS2 lasted not because of the fact developers couldn't program for it, but because they could. Natal will extend the 360's lifespan yes, but not much more than the console would do on its own.

Shenmue hasn't been topped till this day, it did a lot of things that have become conventions for many games. It was ahead of its time, and better than anything that followed... however, with that in mind maybe it's better to want than to have.

I'd rather them not get it right then get it right to be honest. Society will care more about these great films from video games over the source material if it ever happens. Right now it's pretty much ignored except by the angry fans.
It all comes down to two things. The reason children don't use violence in a video game as an example of how to act in life is because they realise the difference between reality and fiction. The government doesn't want to acknowledge that fact because otherwise the barbaric and down right distasteful way video games are treated wouldn't look like righteous crusade to save our youth.
