I mod with source and Ue3 all the time. both great engines. source can do anything UE3 can do, even parallax mapping, a better version of it, with more samples even, than in most games out now, via plugins. it's all up to the developer.
gabe is a great man who created a fantastically robust and efficient engine, not to mention one of the greatest, if not the greatest, FPS franchise of all time. nuff said.
