Ya, I'm pretty sure it's random. I'm GAP(like that even matters anymore) and i bought LBP day one in 08, and although i didn't get the platinum trophy, at least i got Play trophy(one of the three gold trophies) about 2 or 3 months after the game was released and did play quite a bit for a solid 3 or 4 months...
