You guys are all INSANE. This is hardly a surprise, though it may be for you if you really haven't been paying attention up until now. Team Bondi behind the success of L.A. Noire? Really? Try Rockstar Games. They swooped in and saved that game from being cancelled by providing the financial backing for development and basically took control over the games development entirely from that point on.
I'm 150% sure that the sexual preference of the gay and bi characters will play heavily into the story and not just be there to normalize the homosexual lifestyle at all....

I say you do a "Create-a-Character" and then everyone can identify with the character they are playing. However, forcing a player to play a character that's outside of their race could prove to be an effective way to communicate the difficulties of said race to someone who might never know otherwise.
