Couldn't agree more Kakihara. We are a selfish and demanding species. If it's not great or better, we normally can't be bothered with it. However, we do have this right, and for a game asking us to dish out 60 bucks we deserve to get great or better.

I agree with all you are saying here. However, you are talking about industry average, not review scale average. They are two different things.
If you were to forget for a moment about the Metacritics of the world and just focus in on your own personal opinion of a game (because that is all a review is), the score you would arrive upon (be it 1-10, 1-5, etc) is your scale. And if you say something is 5 out of 10, mathmatically, based on your scale, ...
This is not the world according to IGN scoring. On a scale of 1-10, five is "the average" or "middle ground." It is therefore above the average according to a 1-10 scoring scale.
Now, if you'd like to talk industry average in terms of how many games are released and how many of them rate 7 etc, then yes - it is below that "average." But these are two different uses of the word that often get mixed up.
