Just because your OS uses your ram, doesnt mean it will release ram for running applications, a smart os (and vista can do that) will distribute ram by constantly taking and releasing it.

install sp1, if your vista still sucks then, trow out your computer and get a new one.
I ran vista on an AMD64 3200, not exactly a high spec processor anymore, and it also had 3 gb of ram.
Vista sp1 ran flawless on it.
Now i have an I7 with 6 gb of ram, and it laughs at the vista requirements.
Try the beta, its way better then xp, i have xp and w7 dual boot, everytime i switch back to xp i have to let my eyes get used to the blurry mess.
Windows7 is crisp and clean, and its responsive time is way better then xp.
No, they should not, they worked hard on it, why would they give it away for free.
Just dont run Vista on a weak pc and youl be happy with it, and youl have no reason to cry for a free upgrade.
