Because some studio is going to be able to afford the license instead? With the amount of money to be made off of these sports, no one is going to be able to license without a major publisher to back them. Taking away publishers wont magically make developers be able to get a hold of those IPs, there is a lot of business behind all of that, and that is the world we live in.
It seems you missed the point of the article and instead wanted to post your biased opinion. The article isn't in defense of those publishers, but is a statement about big publishers not going anywhere - they were just used as examples.
