Portal 2 and MK are huge but that obviously didn't affect PSN downtime. I never got to play either online yet accept Portal 2 on PC. Luckily I redeemed before PSN went down.

Doubt they are adding new features. Would make little sense. They lose tons of money each day it is down along with customers. They will add features after better security is implemented and psn in its entirety is back online.
Day 1 patches are nearly standard..

When Nintendo brings out a competitor this/next year do you really think MS/Sony will let Nintendo get a huge leap into next gen and eat up the marketshare? You see how that 1 year head start gave MS the advantage this gen. Sony may wait around as they seem set on that 10 year plan but MS certainly won't.
The 360 is more or less just a PC that is dedicated to gaming. This is why it's easiest for devs to work with. Sony went in a bit of a different direction with the PS3 which is why devs struggled at first. All MS has to do next round is up the specs so I wouldn't say they are rushing. It's basically just a new PC minus the OS and such. I'm hoping Sony follows suit and makes it easier for devs next time around which is what they are doing with the NGP.
