You have to go to active quests and deactivate it. There will be nothing on the screen but the compass. It may show some locations but you won't have anything floating on the screen and the steps will be gone as well.

I became a show and prove type with MS at the tail end of the 360 when support vaporized. The last few years of its life were virtually non existent. You can turn off those individually and the entire HUD is you wish. Go into the settings and chose custom HUD to customize the HUD to you preference.
