Watching this, I can't help but feel Left 4 Dead is more ripe for the Hollywood treatment than perhaps any other game. It's not about some deep or convoluted storyline, it's about four people on a journey from point A to point B.

You're taking that WAY out of context. The Skyrim comment was in response to Nintendo of American's president who stated that there has not been and will likely never be a game as good or reviewed as well as Skyward Sword based on eight perfect Metacritic scores (link in article).
That's not necessarily true. It's not as wasteful as you're making it out to be, plus if you took the time to do this then you'd probably want your Sneak skill improved anyway. By the time you reach 50 (or even the mid-30s) you should have all of the skills that you desire, assuming you don't try to make some crazy mage-thief-warrior hybrid who's really good at speech and alchemy too.

All of these games have amazing visual styles and beautiful concept art, but they tend to be pretty cookie-cutter when it comes down to it, unfortunately. Or fortunately, if you don't have time for a million 1,000-hour games.
