@jimmy Riddle Devs would have virtually NO addition work to speak of... It would be a matter of changing controls and adding a lobby, those hardly seem like cumbersome tasks.

ummm.... FFXI was below average at best compared to just about any other mmo around. the lack of endgame material is appalling so the game is just a continuous GRIND like most Japanese mmo's with nothing to offer once you reach cap except to just start over with another class/job. in order for FFIV to stand up against the big new mmo's coming out they need to really evaluate the failure that was FFXI and come out with something truely original in an mmo.

Yes I think its perfectly fine for someone to hack a piece if hardware they own to have full control over it. As for the network it runs on, I think you enter into a grey area. If you aren't being malicious then I say by all means go for it. and if you are being malicious, well than that's your decision, much like breaking any other law.
