Apparently, Naughty Dog held a contest where fans could draw their favorite characters from past Naughty Dog games. Naughty Dog asked Activision if they could use Crash just for the contest but they wouldn't give them the rights to use Crash Bandicoot for their contest.

I wouldn't be against having online only presentations but E3 has been too fun to watch unfold.

You have a point there but this really just revolves around new gamers. There are plenty of potential players who grew up playing these video games and would love another title in the series. There's also a chance that newcomers who might not have ever played these original video games could really grow into and enjoy playing platformers.
