We still don't have a Mature equivalent rating for video games. R18+ has been approved *in principle*, but we won't see it actually affecting games on shelves until at least the end of the year - more likely some time in 2012.

MW2, Duke and GTA4 were all allowed into Australia with no edits, btw ;)

This one has "remastered" levels ;)

They may well do that, but there's a time restriction on how quickly the publisher can resubmit a game that has already been classified.

The FEAR 2 decision was overturned on appeal, nothing to do with an R18+ rating.

She was nine months old, I'm guessing she stumbled, enough to startle her into crying, but not enough to really hurt herself.

The injuries which caused her death were not consistent with those you'd suffer from a simple fall.

Mandatory, government-run classification board. Maximum rating (at the moment) is Mature Adult, which is legally restricted to people 15 years and over. If a game's unsuitable for a 15 year old, it's effectively banned from sale, advertising etc in Australia.

This - both the article and the subject it covers - is so awesome I nearly applauded from my chair.

That happens sometimes, but not frequently. Well done, Miss Haitch / Borderhouse. I have a new site in my RSS reader.

Oh, I understand that - and I know of plenty of girls who are in a similar position. I just was expecting it to be a girl at the controls and writing up the story herself.

For what it is, the story's not bad - just not what I'd expected.

Nice LA Noire spoiler tucked in there, too.
As a female gamer, I object to the fact that the "casual female gamer" didn't play the game herself, and only seems to be included in the story because of who she's married to.

The same thing happened a while ago, too. I think it was Fable 3 and Fallout 3 planned for a similar launch window, which was particularly amusing due to the abbreviations used for both :)

Actually no, Wolf Creek was about another Australian who killed backpackers (Bradley Murdoch).

We've got a few of them, we don't like strangers in these parts.

Exactly. There's also the question of whether or not the PSN hackers are based in Australia - and if they're not, why they are booking local flights and hotels in that country.

That is the best way of describing the situation that I have ever seen. Thank you :D

That was the original APB. GamersFirst have bought the rights and are releasing this new "Reloaded" version as a free-to-play mmo. From early reports, it's already significantly better than Realtime Worlds' version.

There was one last year where an American mother allegedly killed her baby because he wouldn't stop crying while she was playing Farmville.

You can find patterns in anything if you're looking, but bad parents occur all over the world :(

"What more can any gamer ask for?"
...a non-sexist games review that doesn't refer to a "healthy helping of well proportioned young ladies to feast your eyes upon", perhaps?
Maybe we're asking too much.

That's not actually been discussed yet.

The hands-on previews of the game from Vegas last week implied there were naked people (and aliens - spoiler!), but the Australian Classification Board summary makes no mention of it. So, um. yeah.

I'm going to make the assumption that the gaming press who played the game know what they're talking about :)

The Classification Board and 2K Games have confirmed that the game in question is Duke Nukem Forever - a sample from the Board's report is included in the post.

It's pretty much the same weekend as it was last year. The year before that it was in August, but the year before *that* was October :)

The original version of Left 4 Dead 2 is the typical example that gets thrown around. The Australian version has been neutered and most of the blood removed.

There have been no games refused classification in 2010, which seems very strange after we had a record year in 2009. This is fueling stories that the Classification Board is getting lax in their duties, meaning that violent / offensive video games are getting into the hands of young kids.
