You can do it on the PS3 by shutting off notifications, yes, but then you don't get a notification at all. With this, you eventually see what Trophies you got with your notifications on.
Turning off notifications is good for people who don't care about Trophies at all.
Great idea on Sony's part. Retailers have been doing this as exclusive deal incentives but that's for there own marketing.
The great thing about manufactures doing this is it will be available everywhere plus whatever perk you get with the retailer. For example, this is on Amazon so I can use Amazon gift cards to pick it up rather than go to Best Buy or Wal-Mart.
