When my middle button doesn't turn on the machine it is usually because I didn't use the controller to turn the machine off, but if you turn off the ps3 with the controller you should be able to use it to turn it on. My signed in bubble is always in the same place though so I don't know you might have that 1:1,000,000,000,000,000,000 defective unit! LOL
