Dude, no. If you think Sony had absolutely nothing to do with this or had no word on whether they'll play ball or not, then that's straight up bull. If that was the case, then the one time they accidentally allowed cross-play would've stayed up, without any repercussions.
Either back up your claim that Epic could've done this without Sony's approval, or you're just spewing bull.

lol this doesn't mean cross-play/progression is no longer a thing. Account merging was geared towards people who HAD to make separate accounts because of Sony's block (me being one of them, as I couldn't play on the Switch because I previously played on the PS4). After the block was lifted, any new account can/will still be able to link all their platforms and continue having cross-progression (and cross-play if they ever want to do so).
