Fad? I'd call it a boom. Here's a time line of some big ones.
1st we had the POKER boom starting 2003, everyone became a poker pro thanks to ESPN.
2nd the UFC explosion with the TUF show airing on SPIKE TV. Everyone is a MMA fan now.

Something is odd. Why would a professional company just copy paste the art from previous games and not use their own artists who are re-imaging these characters into their artistic style of the game...seems fishy, really amateurish.
