It seemed like a desperate attempt to appeal to a younger demographic. Can't say I'm surprised it didn't pan out.
Interesting topic. I've never been big on collector's editions for the same reasons the article lists (poor quality, goes down in value, etc.), but I will say I always spring for SteelBooks. They (usually) look good and they seem to hold their value more.
