I think the main problem with the pokestop and gym locations mostly based on landmarks such as churches is that the locations were mostly transferred from the previous niantic game ingress

Good idea implemented quite well with a great excuse to get out of the house and walking exercise? Yes. Game changer? No. Maybe if it allowed 'unranked' battles between trainers outside of gyms then it could have been one for the MOBILE industry (I would have said a trading system as well but that's coming in a update).

And it's not even out in Japan or Europe yet officially! 7.5 million in a week is great, revenue-wise it's beating all the most used apps like Facebook and Candy Crush, and once released for everyone (I assume the apk downloaders might have their accounts wiped in place of the official app) the numbers are going to shoot up especially in Japan (No need to explain how crazy the Japanese are to Pokemon).
