Venom & Gambit aren't in because they're not that relevent in the comics at this point. Eddie Brock is Anti-Venom right now, not Venom. While, Gambit hasn't been doing much lately but it looks as if he'll start to pick up soon.
That's not true. Basically every Marvel character in the games besides Shuma & Sentinel has a pretty big fanbase of those who actually read comics. Just because Rocket Raccoon or Nova haven't appeared in movies or cartoons doesn't mean they're not popular.
