I am not surprised, even GT5 and GT6 were criticed for the same, polyphony isn't seeking for flashy graphics, they want a realistic looking game, realism isn't always spectacular. GT6 not looked spectacular, but the ilumination and ambient was clearly done to get the more realist and credible result, again this being somehow boring and not flashy enough for casual gamers and fanboys wanting to brag about graphics.
