This is kind of an impossible thing to determine. It's not like Nintendo wanted to hold on to them, otherwise they wouldn't have sold them to Microsoft. I think Rare would have been bound to be acquired by some entity, at some point, and from what I understand their current downfall isn't due to who owns them, but rather due to the fact that they've had so many projects stuck in development hell. That sounds like an internal issue.
