The first thing they need to do is stop listening to the haters. True fans don't want to see FF turned to the path of realism and practicality, that's what the haters want and I guarantee you that they will still hate it no matter what.
Listening to a bunch of western RPG loyalists will only lead you down the path of ruin. And following the conventions of western developers isn't working either.

FF6 and 7 were probably the most mature games in the series. I miss that old FF feel.
