I agree, it would be a lot cooler if more devs did this, however I would guess they're always busy trying to create the next best thing. :)
I don't really think the Tomb Raider reboot is going to be worth it. Tomb Raider simply worked, people never really stopped buying it and Lara is a gaming icon. Reboot is just another word for publicity stunt.
It seems obvious Duke wouldn't do well. I mean raising anticipation is one thing, but fucking around for almost a decade is another.

Exactly, there are very few unique free to play games out there right now.
I remember there was a popular once called "Freestyle Street Basketball" or something, but I think it had serious lag issues.
