if M$ would go with HD-DVD from the begining, that would be 499-599$ costing console, and by the time of release in 2005, they would lose a LOT of money just on hd-dvd.
Even 499$ costing x360 core, that would ruin XBLA, NO hdd and still a big price.
sales? i am not sure are they would make 5 mln. in first year, with such price + make a price of 399-499$ by Christmas 2006, while ps3 cost 599$. ...
PS3 is meant to be a WINNER in console war, like blu-ray was to be a winner in HD format.

I mean, yes, it`s good to have a choice, BUT for example you bought a blu-ray movie. Then went to a friend, and in blu-ray as ONE standart you will be able without problems to watch thta movie. And in multiplatform era, that friend could have hd-dvd player(it`s about choice you know). So unless you bring with yourself a blu-ray player or buy hd-dvd movie, which is useless to you, you won`t be able to watch that movie, simply Beca...

But anyway, if WB planed to cancel hd dvd support, then when? after CES? BUT that was inevitable.. so why delay?

1) there won`t be confirmation of MGS4 on x360, atleast for 3 month after ps3 release. Lost Planet was stated as exclusive game, till 2-3 month after x360 release.
2) if the game will come after 12-14 month to x360, who will buy x360 because of mgs4? NOONE.
but MANY will buy PS3 for that game.
3) it was stated numerous times, that game will take around 25GB, so who need a game on 3-4 dvds? or not full version?
4) x360 don`t have HDD as stand...

Short technical analysis:
1x blu ray read speed= 36 mbps
the playstation has 2x blu ray read speed so: 72 mbps
1x dvd read speed= 11,08 mbps
the xbox has a read speed of 16x for sinle layered dvds and 8x for double layered dvds so:
single layered=16x11,08= 117,28 mbps
double layered=8x11,08= 88,64 mbps
The speed advantage is neglectable.

xbox in it`s 2 years did only 13 mln., though, x360 for one year didn`t have nextgen competitors.

1) too late, they should do that like 1-1,5 year ago, though developers could make optional HDD cashing atleast for some games.

But Toshiba lost the BIG war and that was inevitable.
IF they wanted atleast stay DRAW, they should join x360 with HD DVD by the time, while price should be the same - 399$. They would lose around 1,2-1,6 bln. $(150-200$ on every x360), but atleast wouldn`t lose the war. Sony would have to accept hd-dvd. But now it`s too late.
