It might help in order to become more accustomed with the world, lore etc but it's not necessary in order to enjoy or understand the game as this game is not a sequel the main chars have nothing to do with the previous game still if you have the money to spare support the first game also as it's also an amazing game & the sales will definitely help to send a message to KONAMI that fans want a new Suikoden game! :)

Xenogears is my personal all time favorite with FFVII follow just behind it, from the countless JRPGs I have play those 2 games have by far the best soundtracks ever, so Mitsuda & Uematsu & I could put Shimomura in 3rd place with Parasite Eve soundtrack which was also amazing.
