At the same E3 that the WiiU was announced both sony and microsoft where showing off the second screen functionality of smart phone (those things most people have) and tablets (those other things most people have) so no neither company made you go out and buy something special to have a second screen experience.
Both microsoft and sony have implemented second screen tech. They just don't require you to by a "special" tablet for it to work. So saying they're not adventurous really isn't true.
