No they aren't.
I bought a couple of Blu-Ray movies from Amazon (I'm in Australia). Some of them don't work on the Blu-ray player (not the PS3, different one).
People in the market for a new DVD player need to know Blu-ray players will play their DVDs, thus they do not have to replace their current collection.
The last VHS dealer closed shop late last year (I think they were based in LA).

You ask why nearly all multi-platform games look identical on both 360 and PS3. It is because they are not optimised for either console.
You will notice how much better exclusives look on each console (like Uncharted, Killzone 2, Gears of War etc) vs how multi-plat games look on the console (ie how Devil May Cry 4 looks on the 360 vs Gears of War 2).
The reason for this is that the developer would have to build the game ground up for both consol...
I just wish they had region free players.
The fact that Killzone 2 is being compared to Crysis is a testament to the achievement Guerilla Games have accomplished.

There is a difference between being a sports fan and one of technology.
Sports you can differentiate whose team is better at the time. Technology such as PS3 vs 360 debates you cannot do such a thing since there is no actual way to say 'x game is better because..' or 'x console is better because...'
Sales of games and consoles do not indicate which one is better, only how it is selling. Yet people throw these numbers out daily to try and prove how good their console ...
