Even if the roles were reversed like Peach rescuing Mario or Zelda recusing Link, would it really make a difference? It's up to the developers to make strong female leads, just look at the Tomb Raider reboot. Lara kicked ass in that. I don't understand this whole feminism thing in gaming. Yes, but you'll get sick of her personality and looks do fade. The point is other developers are putting Nintendo to shame. The latest Rayman games have been better than the latest Mario games. Nintendo needs to start stepping up and rethinking their strategies.
