My CECHG 40GB stopped reading all sorts of discs after less than one month of the expired warrantee and after updating to FW 2.53! and after investigating through the net and the Sony dealers it turned out that the first batch of the 40GB units were equipped with a low quality lenses (KES-400a) that were different from the earlier 60GB units! failure rate in some PAL countries were up to 40%, although mine is Japanese made!!! my Euro PS3 40 gig is Japanese made and works on 110-240 V but in the manual and the bottom it states that it is a 220-240 V, I wonder if all 40 gigs are Japanese too!
