First, if Sony's console was failing it wouldn't be on the market for over 2 years still. Saturn, Dreamcast, Jaguar, and 3DO were failures. Second, Microsoft didn't make a dime off of the first Xbox. Was it deemed a failure, even though it brought us Halo 1&2? They seem okay. Third, FPS is not a niche market, its the biggest market in the industry.
