Yeah, it is kind of a fail that Sony with a 120 million install base to rely on at the start of this gen is actually in a tie with MS who only had a 25 million install base with the original Xbox at the beggining of this gen.
MS had a year head start of course but come on, I'm sure MS would have traded in that year head start for the PS2 install base in a blink of an eye if they could.

Perhaps it has to do with the timing, the launch of Kinect. Maybe they were actually planning for an early Kinect release like rumors were saying.
