Technically, it is the cross button. Always has been. Sony refers to it in their documentation as the cross button when they spell it out in their API's, and their compliance standards stipulate it as such. When expressing it in print though, like in manuals or whatever, for the consumer, they usually do just print it as "X", unless they use a little picture.
