I love this system. About your number one thing not to do, 'don' t tell you're new', I have to disagree. The community is so nice, that when I told it when I was new, many people gave me free stuff. And after, I did it myself too. The community is one of the nicer I know.

A blend of both, but it really depends on how is the game created/developed. When it's lacking storytelling/good writing, I act like I'm the character; I fill the void. If it's really well written, like say Disco Elysium, I put myself in the character's mind. But the later are generally more rare, and usually masterpieces.
