The PS3 outsold the 200 dollar cheaper 360 every single year on the market while having a massive graphical power advantage.
The PS4 is rapidly approaching doubling the Xbox One's installed base and by the end of 2014 it is on track for that ratio to be 4-1.
Every day the Xbox One falls further and further behind it gets cheaper and easier to lock down third party exclusives and add on content for Sony and the PS4.

7 million by the end of March looks reasonable with the only thing keeping Sony from hitting that number is manufacturing capacity of the PS4. Just look at the stock tracking:

Halo 5 isn't coming 2014. And a downgraded port of a PC game isn't going to do much for Xbox One sales.
Selling only 140k consoles in the US isn't going to get Microsoft to 6 million in the first year even with the small amount of Xbox One Europe sales.
Why would Sony have lost support with the PS3?
The PS3 outsold the 360 in worldwide sales the very first year it was on sale and every single year since.

The RRoD did massively inflate 360 installed base numbers, but one more important difference with the PS4 is Sony isn't letting Microsoft force third party developers to gimp their Playstation versions of game this gen.

That would be nine more months of sales starting from a base of seven million or so. Unless something catastrophic happens, Sony will easily sell more than eight million consoles over the next nine months with Japan adding to the sales and manufacturing increasing capacity over time.
Seven million sounds about right for the PS4 by the end of March.
That makes the previous upgraded estimate of end of 2014 sales of 15 million seem way low.

Graphically the engine doesn't look to be that impressive compared to how amazing the previous Metal Gears were when they were released on the PS1,PS2, and PS3. None of the previous titles were forced to cater to much weaker hardware like the 360.

Back in 2006 both Nintendo and Sony switched to reporting actual sales to customers while Microsoft still reports shipments to retail as 'sales'.
This silly numbers game was made the most obvious back in the first year of the Xbox 360 where Microsoft flooded the retail with extra stock so they could put out a press release claiming 10.5 million sold when in reality it was only 8.5 million sold and 2 million sitting unsold on store shelves and in warehouses.
