Normally because its easier, even if your an experienced pc gamer there are glitches and pitfalls depending on drivers, patches, latest version of Physx, etc. It can be a pain in the ass.
Masterchief is integral to ME for the series, but I know alot of so-called Halo fans that throw the single player to the side and instantly jump online, sometimes never even starting the campaign.

I think it may be more than 5 million, you underestimate the sheer popularity of Starcraft. Another factor is how scalable it is, so folks with a lesser gaming rig will be able to enjoy it.
