This is correct. The surge in numbers came as kids, young adults, and parents were stuck at home. It's not about the disposable income available (although I do suspect a lot of consoles were bought with stimulus funds).
It's more about people who ordinarily wouldn't subscribe or play online suddenly being stuck inside.
Things opened up. Kids went back to school and sports. Adults went back to normal.

Alexios was an afterthought to the production, and it showed. I can't think of seeing any reviewer or critic say that Alexios > Kassandra either. They run the same dialog, same armor, etc. Not sure what besides actor really differentiates them.

Kassandra was by far the better choice in Odyssey imo.
I usually go with whoever I feel is the better voice actor. Ended up choosing female lead in Immortals and Cyberpunk for the same reason.
