I played the Japanese version. I'm such big Trails and Legend of Heroes fan there is no way I'll wait for the NA release. And to answer your question....While you technically can start with Cold Steel, it's still vastly preferable to play Sky first if possible. There's subtext and buildup that significantly enhances the experience of Cold Steel if you play it afterwards, and Cold Steel would also spoil some things from Sky if you played it first.
