LOL, the hate is almost universal for this game.
I think I'm the only one not bothered with this change, but that's maybe because I was never a DMC fan in the first place :D
I still think it's a ridiculous attire, considering the context, I mean, they're supposed to be soldiers, right?. VC1 designs where much better in that regard.
Besides, I didn't really say anything about the plot, I think it's fine.

I've played a couple of levels on legendary. The elite's AI is one of the best I've seen.
They constantly dodge, they hide when they're out of shield, they flank you when they can and they throw grenades quite frequently.
Each kill has to be earned against those guys.
