They are useless since they are not implemented into all PS3 games.
Achievements are, which is one of the reasons I like them, they also act as a record of all games played, which is half the point.
I've never seemed to care about Trophies, but I love racking up my Gamerscore :D I think I have like 204? or 240 trophies.
Nope, they cut down on violence.
Its so much easier to let your aggression out on a game, just drive around for 15 minutes killing loads of innocents in a game, and chill out and unwind.

In the same sense, PSN probably wouldn't exist if it was not for Xbox Live.
If Xbox Live was not there to set the standard, Sony would have had no reason, backlash or pressure to not include an online component at all.

People pay for Xbox Live as a neccesity, as in they want to play online
if you could play online with Silver, I'm guessing there would be a hell of a lot less people paying for Gold.

Whats wrong with facebook
I use it to keep in touch with old college friends and the like, its great, not everyone likes to use email, not everyone uses a messenger or whatever, but pretty much everyone has a facebook account, its a great contact hub for everyone you know, as well as current friends you still see.
I got to be honest, when I see someone badmouth facebook, I can't help but think, damn I bet he has no one to add...
