With the launch of the PS4 a sequel is definitely on the horizon, and i know many can't wait to see what it evolves into.

That's actually a very good point. If you think about it, if MS knew the specs of the ps4, they would have most certainly bumped up their own specs in order to compete or surpass the ps4.
And to be honest if i were at sony, i would take consistently better versions of a multiplatform game instead of tripping up whilst getting one good game.
