Because if sony goes away Elder Scrolls, Bioshock Mass Effect, Witcher, FIFA, Assassin's Creed, Forza, Zelda, Monster Hunter, GTA, Batman, Red Dead, Dues Ex, Castlevania, Metal Gear, Fallout, Portal, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Fable, Splinter Cell, Gears of War and hundreds of other non fps series would go with them right?

Doubtful, VITA hardly sells enough software to cannibalize PSP sales. PSP has nothing to worry about from VITA just yet, VITA has way too few a fanbase to be any sort of threat.

Fault? What fault? It's a scheduled maintainence run. Such things are necessary to keep the real faults from happening.
Although it begs the question, why 14 hours? More importantly, why does the competing network not have these scheduled down times? When do they run maintainence and why doesn't it result in half day outages? I guess it is the advantages of being a software company or the advantages of running a more experienced network.
