i doubt it will matter either way. if they give you the option of killing a character then he isn't important to the game. i bet he has no lines of the point where he would of died and just become a background character.
it is contextual from what i have seen. the characters react realistically in kz when they are hit so depending which way they go or land will determine the kill. when you kick them and they hit a wall you can the stab them in the back and if you kick them with nothing near them you can stab them in the eye. some of the kills are just random animations and others aren't.
