YouTubers Early Access - Is It Fair?

Recently, my girlfriend has bought me a copy of Dark Souls 3 for the PlayStation 4 but to my dismay, it seems some people got their hands on the game early. I know that the game was released early in japan, but it seems some YouTubers also got a hold of the game early and not the Japanese version (which was obtainable through setting your systems local to japan and buying it from the Japanese store) but they had physical copies of the game before it was released. I understand that there was an open beta so that the game was available to try during the month of October, but then YouTubers are allowed to get the game early starting let’s plays of it before the game was officially released in the US and Europe. How is this fair? What makes the likes of Oroboro and TearOfGrace (two YouTubers I am a fan of) so superior that they are able to obtain the game before release? The game was released in the States and EU on April the 18th and Japan on March the 25th but players had a copy of the game before that.

This problem is not just with dark souls but other games with South Park: The Stick of Truth and the YouTube “sensation” himself PewDiePie getting his hands on the game early and making a few videos about it and saying that he would need to stop making videos. Now the problem with that is that he wasn’t allowed to make videos but nothing was stopping him from playing the game past the point where he could make videos for it. One counter argument with this is that he would only play games “blind” meaning that he would only play a game he hasn’t played yet but my counter-counter argument would be that he has played games on his channel that he has played before including Heavy Rain and Mirrors Edge, both of which he says he loves to death, so if he were to get a copy of a new mirrors edge game early, I highly doubt he’d be able to stop considering his love of the games.
Now I may be the only person who thinks this a little unfair but that’s what I want to draw attention too. Yes there are open betas for games, but it’s when only a select few from YouTube are allowed access to it.

The problem doesn’t just cover games but also DLC for games in games in which again, some YouTubers had access to the second DLC for Call of Duty Black Ops 3 before it was released. Now whether this was a closed access for the select few or for anyone who paid for a sneak peak. The reason I bring this up is because one seems unfair but the other seems reasonable. Why should someone get early access to a game because they are on YouTube and such, whereas everyone else has to wait?

I would like to know what everyone else thinks about this topic.

Reviewers get games early. It's always been like this.

kdmitchell_toh3667d ago

Youtubers and Twitch streamers are not reviewers. That was the issue. Even an UFC fighter got it early! I complained about this in a piece for my website as well. And Bandai Namco aren't the only one's doing this and this is a problem.

thorstein3665d ago (Edited 3665d ago )

Lebron James gets his Nike shoes that bear his name early. He also doesn't pay for them.

This is how marketing works. If I get my game in the hands of a celebrity or widely followed source, my game gets exposure. That UFC fighter may be a huge fan of the series and will tweet some positive things about it.

Buying cutesy ad campaigns on TV is dying (if not already dead). This is how you advertise now.

The people that make game guides get them early too.

But it isn't the just reviewers who are getting them.

thekhurg3668d ago

They get them for press purposes. These people have higher exposure to more people and if they're playing it and liking it then it increases the chances that other gamers might get the game. From software is just playing the positive news angle and it's working.

kdmitchell_toh3667d ago

It wasn't Fromsoftware who did it, it was Bandai Namco. And I don't agree with that completely. Sure there are tons of E-celebs who stream and I give them props. But what they did was lie to the fans, especially to the PC ones, when they said the game wasn't ready... yet there go copies to people who didn't play the game. They also had the game ruined by tons of people rushing to YouTube to post boss fights, endings, and countless streams... despite Namco asking and trying to force those people who got the game early not to do.

warriorcase3671d ago

Its mass advertising. They get copies early to play a little and show off the game to their massive user base for minimal cost to the publisher/developer. Its nothing new really, much in the same principle as celebrities get given expensive watches and cars for free to show them off. You find where the eyes are all looking and try to put your product in front of them.

Because some YouTube video game content makers have a huge audience to promote a upcoming release of a video game .

Also, some YouTube video game content makers are paid by publishers to say good things about a video game before it comes out, even if they hate the game .

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing19d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9219d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit19d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing19d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9219d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
