I really dont have a favorite. I like having a great SP and MP like uncharted 2.

UnSelf5564d ago

yea, the article explains that in order to become the best you must implement both in a brilliant way

WildArmed5563d ago

"only a developer who implements both features inside of a game whose very SP/MP components compliment each other so well and transition between each other so seamlessly, reserves the right to be accredited a winner. Many titles execute this technique very well in fact."

I was more interested to know what games/devs you believe to incorporate both of these components seamlessly.

Imo, I've always been a supporter for SP gaming. Regardless of the fact that my favorite game of this generation is probably so because of it's co-op multiplayer. SP has been getting kicked in the back seat as time passed.

I'm all for MP, but it seems like MP is holding back the SP categories indirectly.
There are genre's which are completely BUILT around single player experiences. I know some of you may disagree, but action and RPG genre is much better suited to the SP category. But w/ the increasing popularity of MP component in gaming, the games that 'could have been', never see the light of day.
Each developer/publisher chooses only so much to invest in SP-only games. And it's not their fault.
SP-only games have come down to rental-only status unless it offers more than 60hours of gameplay. Regardless of quality of the title. Now you are seeing hybrid games that are incorporating MP mechanics into 'SP-only genres'.
Demons Souls is a game I like to bring up again and again.. It did MP perfectly from a action genre standpoint. But, it was clear to see how the SP was lacking in the overall sense. The experience you get from DS is no doubt amazing. But if it was an SP only experience, no doubt you would have remembered the game quite differently.

Games like WKC and Borderlands would be extremely lacking were it NOT for the MP component. But as you can see, as I list these examples, it's hard to say that the two components supported each other.
It's either the SP is the saving grace, or vice versa.

Ofc, some people do argue that there are exceptions, But I beg to differ. The affection of the game leads you to believe that the game has flawlessly implemented MP and SP.

I can't really recall a game at this point where I said 'This is the complete package
I do not feel like I lost something that could have been because they decided to inlcude both MP and SP'

Now, I'm not saying that MP only or SP only are always quality titles. By far from it.
But i'll stop here. I think I went on much longer than I expected.

you just listed a few titles in ur post that answered ur own question. now, on the subject of whats ur idea of a game good is beyond me. but u did list a few good examples of titles that display that technique nonetheless.

Demons Souls being one of em. idk about u, but the SP in DS ALONE makes it a very good game. whether the MP detracted from how well the game couldve been is far beyond me you or anyone else. heck, the devs themselves dont even really know how well a game couldve been if they left a component out.

im sure in their eyes, they made the best game possible for the time in which it was released.

what makes a game perfect is an entirely different point altogether

Poin Taken.
While I do agree Demons Souls is an amazing game.. very well though out gameplay and stages. it was the lack of story(Or storytelling?) that was the setback for me.
Since in a SP experience, story seemed (atleast to me)to be a defining factor.
That is why I couldn't call DS perfect.
I played DS alot, 300 hours easily. But it was the challenge is presented that got to me. So I'm not saying the game sucks.
All I'm saying is there were aspects that the 'juggling' of MP and SP FROM SOFTWARE did effect the overall game.
And they still managed to pull out an awe-inspiring game.

i see whatchu saying.

its true sp campaigns are losing their stronghold on the market becuz of the new demand.

sad times indeed

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing15d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit15d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing15d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9215d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
