President and CEO of Ubisoft, Yves Guillemot believes that the PS3 and Xbox 360 are very similar and that there is almost no difference between the two consoles in terms of capabilities.
GamesIndustry.biz has him quoted as saying the PS3 and Xbox 360 are “close in what we can do with them” and the PS3 has some elements that are better or different, the Xbox 360 does have some distinct advantages but did not elaborate further on that point.
There also isn’t as much work involved in translating a game from the PS3 to the Xbox 360 or vice versa, taking Ubisoft engineers only “10 per cent extra time to develop for the other machine.”
To that end, the company now develops games for the PS3 and Xbox 360 at the same time, reducing costs.
There’s also the issue of the Xbox 360 and PS3 games selling for more than compared to a Nintendo title but those games cost considerably more to develop which means it needs to sell more Xbox 360 and PS3 games to make the cost worth it.
Guillemot is hopeful for the future of in-game advertising but unless it is the “in your face” kind, most gamers are unlikely to notice, instead preferring to face on the objectives present in the game (look at an ad, or kill the bad guy, tough choice there).
